Chelsea victory just like Zim Independence

On the day that Zimbabwe celebrated 32 years of independence, Chelsea FC celebrated a 1-0 victory against FC Barcelona in a UEFA Champions League match. I could not help but draw up these parallels in my head.


In as much as I appreciate the sacrifices that the liberation heroes made during those tough times, I still think the government has undone those good works. Independence should be not only be from white rule, but it should be independence in the totalitarian nature of the word, encompassing economic, social and political independence. People should not be forced to align to a particular party violently as we see today. So in essence, the Independence celebrated on the 18th of April is just but a vacuous one.

It was therefore puzzling to see scores of people at the National Sports Stadium celebrating this empty occasion, as empty as The Blues’ win over FC Barca. Maybe, just maybe, they had gone there for the free food and entertainment. Or they were scared of the violence which would befall them if they chose not to attend the celebrations, just like these MDC supporters by Zanu PF supporters


I say Chelsea’s victory is hollow because a one goal cushion is not much to bank on when you are yet to face the mighty Catalans at their own base, filled with over 90 000 vociferous Cules, urging on the best team in the world (Fifa rankings), and they are the defending champions. As if that is not enough, they have the fortune of having the best player in the world play for them. No prizes for guessing who that is, the Little Magician #10. Some respected professionals seem to think that he is probably the greatest player the world has ever seen. Mind you, they have been following the game when you were just but a thought in your father’s head, so don’t bother arguing.



All I can say to Chelsea and Zimbabwe is enjoy your inane victories while they last, because when the moment of truth comes, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!!!

The term of office for the Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri expired at the end of January 2010 prompting the President to re-appoint him. Should Mthwakazi be a separate state?

The envisioned Mthwakazi will encompass Matabeleland and Midlands Provinces. The party responsible for these ideas is the Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF). But are such notions justified? One might begin to dissect this question by analysing the origins of such thoughts. The Gukurahundi Genocide is not far off their lips as their foremost justification.
